Hollywood Actor Carl Weathers, Co-Star of FanDuel's Super Bowl Push, Dies at 76
He gained fame as Apollo Creed in Rocky
Hollywood actor Carl Weathers, who garnered worldwide acclaim as Apollo Creed in the Rocky film franchise—and co-starred in the current FanDuel Super Bowl campaign—passed away yesterday at 76.
Weathers “died peacefully in his home” and no cause of death was specified, per a report in the L.A. Times.
Along with his iconic turns as Creed, Weathers appeared in projects ranging from Predator and The Mandalorian to Happy Gilmore. Though mainly an action star, he was also adept at serious drama and comedy, able to handle weighty roles and humor with equal aplomb.
On screen, Weathers exuded confidence and strength—but could appear vulnerable when necessary. No matter the part, he was always 100 percent credible.
In “Kick of Destiny II,” he played Rob Gronkowski’s coach, helping the former NFL tight end prep for a 25-yard field goal attempt on Super Sunday. That’s taking place in a live segment airing just before kickoff, with a commercial based on his success or failure set for the second quarter.
It’s unclear how Weathers’ passing will impact “Kick of Destiny,” though FanDuel offered this statement:
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Carl Weathers. Throughout his life, Carl was an iconic talent who had a profound impact on the people he worked with on and off the screen. FanDuel was fortunate to have had an opportunity to work with him during our Super Bowl campaign. We are adjusting our campaign accordingly out of respect for the family during their time of grief.”
