Christian Initiative Returns for Third-Straight Super Bowl

Ad From He Gets Us features Johnny Cash's take on 'Personal Jesus'

What would Jesus do?

For the third straight Super Bowl, the He Gets Us initiative answers that question in work created by Lerma.

Funded by nonprofit faith group Come Near, a :60 called “What Is Greatness” uses striking still photos to show folks with differing opinions and worldviews finding common ground.

Johnny Cash’s raw, driving cover of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus” elevates the work considerably.

The legendary Man in Black strums that guitar with the power of a full church choir. It’s riveting. Best possible music choice right there, boosting the notion of personal devotion empowering believers and their broader community.

“Jesus redefined greatness,” He Gets Us says in press materials. “How does his version stack up with ours? Is being great, as our society defines it, really that great? Or, is greatness quite the opposite of what we think it is?”

“Jesus defined true greatness in a very different way. He showed that the greatest thing we could be is in humble service to others.”

It’s a notion that transcends belief systems. We should all treat each other that way.

Regardless, the campaign has come under fire for its ties to right-leaning groups and conservative sources of funding.

(Which brand will take home the 2025 Super Clio for the Big Game’s best ad? We’ll find out on Feb. 10.)
