2 Minutes With … Bobby Clemens, ED of Creative Content at the New York Mets

On how sports teaches important life skills

Bobby serves as executive director of creative content at the New York Mets. With over 15 years of marketing and storytelling expertise in the sports industry, he has developed and produced award winning content across social, broadcast and stadium events.

We spent two minutes with Bobby to learn more about his background, his creative inspirations and recent work he’s admired.

Bobby, tell us …

Where you grew up, and where you live now.

I grew up in Copiague on the South Shore of Long Island. I’m still living on Long Island, just a little further east.

Your earliest sports memory.

My earliest—or maybe my favorite—was when I was playing little league, around 10 years old.  My grandma, whom my siblings and I called Mama, had given me a red Easton bat a few days before a game. I’ll never forget getting up to the plate and hitting a home run. It was an inside-the-park homer, but those still count! I ran up to Mama and said: “That one’s for you!” A little cheesy, but it sticks in my mind to this day.

Your favorite sports team(s).

Mets, Jets, Knicks and St. John’s Basketball

Your favorite athlete(s).

I always cherished the old timers even though I never got to see them play.  My father and grandfather told me stories about Seaver, Mays and all of the other greats. Growing up, I loved Darryl Strawberry and even though he left the Mets in 1990 when I was only 4, I still followed his career. But my all-time favorite ballplayer was Ken Griffey Jr. Who didn’t try to emulate that perfect swing growing up!

Your favorite sports show or podcast.

ESPN SportsCenter of course! I miss the days of Stuart Scott.

Your favorite sports movie and/or video game.

Hands down, The Sandlot. I even chose the name Bennett for my youngest son so I can call him Benny.  Don’t tell my wife.

A recent project you’re proud of.

Working on the Mets Super Bowl ad in 2023. It was a true collaboration between a number of departments within the organization, FCB N.Y. and m2 Production. To create something seen by so many people was pretty special.

Someone else’s project that you admired recently.

Adidas: “The Official Leak of the World Cup Kits.” Creating a viral moment like that was brilliant. The engagement that campaign got for zero paid media was remarkable.

What sports can do that nothing else can.

Besides promoting physical health and helping people maintain a healthy lifestyle, sports can teach so many important life skills: teamwork, leadership, discipline and perseverance. Sports provides opportunities for social interaction, community engagement and cultural exchange. That first time walking out of the tunnel in a stadium and seeing the green grass of the field, eating your first hot dog in the upper deck, seeing that walk-off celebration live or taking your child to their first game—sports gives us moments that only sports can.

What you’d be doing if you weren’t in the sports world.

I’d like to think I would still be working in the creative field. I got pretty lucky that I work for a team I grew up cheering for!
