Color Cannabis Offers a Coloring-Book and Cookbook as Holiday Stocking Stuffers
Design-led work from Smaller Agency
Seeking to promote WeedMD’s Color Cannabis products for the holiday season with something more than traditional category swag like lighters, tote bags and baseball hats, Smaller Agency took a page from the adult-coloring-book craze.
Not only has the creative shop in Toronto produced such an item (see above, with branded pencil crayons!) for the provider of oils, gels and powders, it has created an illustrated cookbook as well:
Add a Little Color to Your Cooking explains how to make weed-infused butter or oil for use in dozens of recipes. The accent’s on safety, as over-consumption in the cannabis edibles space is a prime concern.
“You can’t do traditional ads with cannabis, so we need to focus on retail” to establish the brand, Smaller Agency founder and CEO Noah Barlow tells Muse. “Right now, the retail environment for cannabis is all pretty standard and boring. We wanted to do something fun.”
Cheap-to-produce coloring books for grownups have enjoyed a vogue in recent years, so Barlow decided such stocking stuffers would fill a void for this particular client. The cookbook follows a similar strategy, he says, helping to educate consumers about legal weed, and showing how cannabis can be integrated into their routines.
Hey, now we know what to get Snoop Dogg for Christmas.
In fact, Color’s audience “skews more toward a newcomer to cannabis with the focus on education. It’s fun and playful and won’t offend,” Barlow says.
Both books are free for download or available as gifts in Canadian dispensaries.
Expanding its portfolio (and perhaps its consciousness!) beyond marijuana, Smaller Agency recently opened an office in Kelowna, British Columbia, to service wellness company Doseology. The shop developed these minimalist package designs for Doseology products, which are derived from mushrooms (that’s “shrooms,” people):
