Captain Obvious Gives an Epic Tour of Resorts World Las Vegas

Spokesguy hits the Strip in style

Captain Obvious delivers rapid-fire bursts of his trademark self-evident hype in a co-branded campaign from Hotels.com and Resorts World Las Vegas, the glitzy, 3,500-room complex on the world-famous Strip.

Tombras delivers a zippy two-minute film, with the Cap—aka, Brandon Moynihan—in fine, frenetic form. He tours the venue’s eateries, its 117,000-square-foot casino and other attractions. At one point, he gawks at Katy Perry—who doesn’t appear, though she has done ads for Resorts World.

Did you notice how the Captain loses his shirt at the 1:20 mark? He’s not playing blackjack, just checking out one of five swimming pools. In Vegas, as we all know, everyone’s always a winner!

This is Tombras’s first foray with the spokescharacter, developed for Hotels.com by Crispin Porter Bogusky. When the Big Obvy first hit screens in 2014, some snarky sod wrote, “For me, Captain Obvious is worth a watch once or twice, but—like any ostentatious and irritating hotel guest—risks overstaying his welcome.”

What mindless tripe! Clearly, this constantly evolving campaign is forever. The Resorts World/Hotels.com mashup seems like a smart bet, with a beloved mascot pointing viewers to a new destination and booking site at the top of the getaway funnel.

“Over the years we’ve refined the brand’s strategy, as well as the Captain Obvious character, which allows us to work with multiple partners like Resorts World in fun and unique ways,” says Mike Wolfe, head of global brand creative at Hotels.com.

“Looking ahead to the fall and holiday season, we’re continuing to see demand, particularly for domestic travel, and positive signals for overall industry recovery,” he says. “As always, we encourage everyone to make responsible travel decisions, check local Covid-19 restrictions and requirements, and book trips with flexibility.”
