2 Minutes With … Eddy Rodriguez, CD at FCB Health Canada

On making a difference in the medical space and the transformative role of tech

As a creative director with over 20 years of experience, Eddy Rodriguez works in motion graphics, video production and web-based technologies, including 3D, across various platforms and media.

We spent two minutes with Eddy to learn more about his background, his creative inspirations and recent work he’s admired.

Eddy, tell us …

Where you grew up, and where you live now.

I was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia, and moved to Canada when I was 17. Today, I call Toronto my home.

How you first got interested in health.

It happened purely by chance. Health wasn’t really on my radar for my creative career. I’ve been all over the place—working in editorial, music, entertainment and corporate design. Then, I got a gig at a pharma company designing packaging components, from boxes to leaflets to blisters, etc. I thought: “Wow, there’s a lot of room for creativity to make a real difference here.” And that’s how I got hooked.

One of your favorite projects you’ve ever worked on.

That’s a tough one, but if I had to pick, I’d probably go with the relaunch of Allerject in Canada. It’s wild to think how many people need to carry epinephrine but don’t. We used animation and some creative tactics to make a campaign we called “Fits Your Life.” It felt amazing to help get the word out about something so important.

A recent project you’re proud of.

The recent internal rebrand for FCB Health Canada. This project allowed me to use my experience in 3D modeling, animation and even a bit of A.I. to come up with a totally new look. We wanted to stand out from the crowd and show off our innovative side. I think the end result really captures who we are as a team. It’s fresh, it’s unique and it grabs your attention.

One thing about how health is evolving that you’re excited about.

What sparks my interest these days is the transformative role technology and artificial intelligence are playing in the health sector. It’s fascinating to see how these elements are shaping areas from personalized medicine to medical research.

Someone else’s work, in health or beyond, that you admired lately.

There’s a ton of inspiring stuff out there, but I have to give a shout-out to the creative talent at Area 23. Their ability to disrupt the status quo is brilliant. One project that wowed me was “Eyedar: The Unwearable Collection.”

Another is “Lil Sugar.”

A book, movie, TV show, or podcast you recently found inspiring.

Recently, I’ve been enjoying a video podcast called Real Creative Leadership with Adam Morgan. He’s the executive creative director at Adobe and the stuff he talks about is very insightful. He also brings in other big names from the creative world to chat about various topics. It’s really inspiring to hear different perspectives and experiences.

A visual artist or band/musician you admire.

I’m really into the stuff Oliver Latta, or Extraweg as he’s known in the CGI/VFX scene, puts out there. His art is kind of weird and strange, but that’s what I love about it.

Your favorite fictional character.

I’m a big fan of Miles Morales from the Spider-Man multiverse

Someone worth following on social media.

If you’re into mind-bending visual effects and mind-blowing CGI, I highly recommend following Extraweg.

Your main strength as a marketer/creative.

My biggest strength is the ability to adapt and learn. I’m always open to new ideas and technologies.

Your biggest weakness.

Sweets. Whether it’s a slice of cake or a chocolate chip cookie, my sweet tooth always gets the best of me.

One thing that always makes you happy.

Spending time with my 2-year-old daughter. Hearing her laughter and seeing her find delight in the simplest things truly warms my heart.

One thing that always makes you sad.

When my computer crashes and I realize I forgot to save my work. It’s a moment of panic followed by a facepalm.

Something people would find surprising about you.

I used to be a competitive swimmer and got to compete at the national level.

What you’d be doing if you weren’t in health.

I would probably be working in the exciting world of visual effects or the gaming industry.
