The Clio Awards Ceremony Host Announcement

John Wick: Ballerina, Elio and More Great Movie Trailers

Plus: Hurry Up Tomorrow, One Battle After Another and Final Destination: Bloodlines

Here are some trailers that caught our eye this week…

One Battle After Another

Warner Bros.

Trailer Agency: Major Major

A group of ex-revolutionaries reunite when an old enemy takes one of their daughters captive. The tone is immediately set, as a single piano note repeats with urgency. We follow Leonardo DiCaprio’s travails in this quirky-ass, dark comedy from Paul Thomas Anderson. The wide shot of a pregnant woman firing a machine gun—and then delivering the line, “Bitch, I felt like Tony Montana!” is priceless. Hits theaters on Sept. 26.

Final Destination: Bloodlines

Warner Bros. New Line Cinema

Trailer Agency: Zealot L.A.

A college student returns home to break the cycle of death that’s plagued her family. Final Destination is back and this is a clever one for fans of the franchise—and for new viewers, a terrifying recap. The music choice, “Something’s Got a Hold On Me”—coupled with eerie sound cues under a guy’s speech about family—helps tease the terror. When grandma says, “Death is coming for our family,” you better listen! Learn who survives on May 16.

Elio

Disney / Pixar Animations Studios

Trailer Agency: Screenland Creative

Elio, a boy with an active imagination, feels lonely. While on his Mom’s Army base, he secretly sends a radio message and finds himself transported to another planet where—you guessed it—he makes a friend. Props for highlighting the laugh-out-loud adult humor and universal themes. Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” provides the soundtrack. In theaters June 20.

John Wick: Ballerina

Lionsgate

Trailer Agency: AV Squad

An assassin seeks revenge for her father’s death. We’re hooked by the voiceover explaining a mysterious spirit that is both a protector of the innocent and vengeful to those with darkness in their hearts. We watch Eve (Ana de Armas) emerge from the shadows and take down three bad guys in less than three seconds. This one perfectly balances the badassery with smart-ass dialogue. While Eve hunts down the tribe that killed her father, she proves she can’t be stopped. It ends with a sexy standoff between Eve and the Baba Yaga. Who will survive? Gabriel Byrne and Keanu Reeves also star. Arrives in June.

Hurry Up Tomorrow

Lionsgate

Trailer Agency: Grandson

A musician (Abel Tesfaye) meets a woman and their connection challenges everything he knows about himself. We open on Jenna Ortega frantically pouring gasoline inside a house. The Weeknd’s beats flow over stunning visuals of Jenna and Abel getting closer—even though something seems off. It ends with quick cuts of a shadowy figure, Abel drowning in a tub and a house going up in flames. Hurries into theaters next month.
