2 Minutes With … Connie Chan Wang, SVP of Marketing at Headspace

On being a 'multiplier'

Connie is the senior vice president of marketing at Headspace, where she leads a team across demand generation and marketing. Earlier, Connie spent a decade with LinkedIn, finally serving as senior director of global brand marketing. She founded LinkedIn’s Social Media Center of Excellence, served as chief editor of the brand’s corporate blog and managed the growth of its social media properties.

We spent two minutes with Connie to learn more about her background, her creative inspirations and recent work she’s admired.

Connie, tell us …

Where you grew up, and where you live now. 

I’m a California girl through and through. I grew up in Torrance and now live in Los Altos.

How you first got interested in health. 

Eight years ago, I went through three miscarriages and felt so much grief, sadness and isolation. I come from a culture where we did not talk about mental health. In this desperate moment, I found a therapist who changed my life. I crawled out of a dark hole and started regaining my sense of identity. That’s when I promised myself I would pay it forward. Which is why I’m now at Headspace, where our mission is to provide every person with access to lifelong mental health support—from mindfulness and meditation to coaching, therapy and psychiatry.  

One of your favorite projects you’ve ever worked on. 

At LinkedIn, my team launched the #InItTogether campaign in 14 countries in 2018. We brought to life inspiring stories of members who had helped each other meaningfully change their career and life trajectories.

A recent project you’re proud of. 

We recently launched mental health coaching directly to consumers to help people with everything from managing stress and building relationships to getting more sleep and improving emotional resilience. This is not new for Headspace. Via our merger with Ginger, we’ve been providing mental health coaching through employers and health plans for the past nine years—with studies showing improvements in anxiety and depression. We’re democratizing access to a lower-cost, accessible and proven level of care. Later this year, we’ll launch therapy directly to consumers. 

One thing about how health is evolving that you’re excited about. 

Previously taboo topics are finally being talked about and supported in the workplace. 

Someone else’s work, in health or beyond, that you admired lately. 

Michael Cera for CeraVe. Such an unexpected and brilliant campaign. 

A book, movie, TV show, or podcast you recently found inspiring. 

Any audiobook narrated by Marin Ireland. She brings every character to life so vividly. Every book she’s chosen to narrate is worth listening to. A few recommendations: Remarkably Bright Creatures, every book by Fredrik Backman and Nothing to See Here. 

A visual artist or band/musician you admire. 

Jay Chou, best-selling Taiwanese singer and musician. I admire how he’s been able to build and maintain his brand, artistry and relevance over a 24-year career. 

Your favorite fictional character. 

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, from the series written by Louise Penny. The characteristic I love about him most is that he sees the best in people when no one else can.
