From The Falcon and the Winter Soldier to Amend, See This Week's Trailers and Posters

Plus, Frances McDormand in the acclaimed Nomadland

Valentine’s Day has arrived, and this week entertainment marketing is here to remind us that love can come in many shapes and forms.

We saw Falcon and Winter Soldier staring deep into one another’s eyes (OK, yes, it was a staring contest) and a mom who still loves her kids even after they wreck her car by going through a car wash with the windows down. We met a group of high schoolers trying to figure out what love is and two women who seem to have already found their love—the love of life on the road and the love of soul.

Or perhaps you’re more interested in celebrating a different holiday this weekend, in which case you can get your President’s Day fill by exploring the Constitution with Will Smith … but we might just ask him to be our valentine, too, while we’re at it.

No matter what you’re celebrating or what love looks like to you, you won’t want to miss this week’s trailers and posters.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Disney+
Trailer Agency: Trailer Park
Poster Agency: N/A

Marvel fans got their moment on Super Bowl Sunday when Disney+ premiered the trailer for the highly anticipated new Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Using a trailerized remix of Migo’s “Is You Ready” to guide the way, the piece builds into a high-octane and flawlessly executed snapshot of the action to come when Falcon and Winter Soldier team up to save the world. The staring contest end clip was particularly useful in showing off the slick editorial and providing that signature Marvel humor. The key art finds our two heroes contemplating how to take on the world when the series premieres March 19.

Yes Day

Netflix
Trailer Agency: Zealot
Poster Agency: N/A

A fun, lighthearted romp introduces us to Yes Day, a Netflix comedy starring Jennifer Garner as a mom who is sick of telling her three kids “no” all the time, so she allows them to make the rules for a day. As you might expect, chaos ensues, and this trailer highlights the madcap fun with a pop tune and strategic stop downs to let the jokes land. An epic water balloon fight breaks out on the colorful poster. Yes Day comes to Netflix on March 12.

Generation

HBO Max
Trailer Agency: N/A

Generation is a new original show from HBO Max that follows a group of high school students as they explore their sexuality and begin to find themselves against the backdrop of their conservative community. Two fitting music cues, Todrick Hall’s “I Like Boys” and Troye Sivan’s “Rager Teenager!” lead the way in this trailer that nicely balances both the drama and fun of being a high schooler and coming into your identity. Excellent storytelling provides just enough to get you hooked while still leaving plenty to be explored when Generation comes to HBO Max on March 11.

Genius: Aretha

NatGeo
Trailer Agency: N/A

Next up in NatGeo’s acclaimed Genius anthology series is Genius: Aretha, as the show tackles Aretha Franklin’s fascinating life tale. With Academy Award nominee Cynthia Erivo stepping into the title role, this trailer gives us a first look at both her performance and her vocals, as her cover of “Chain of Fools” serves as an excellent backdrop to the piece. The piece uses the song and some great dialogue selection to weave together a look at the phases of Aretha’s life that the series will explore, before building into a powerful closing montage. Genius: Aretha premieres March 21.

Nomadland

Fox Searchlight
Trailer Agency: Mark Woollen & Associates
Poster Agency: N/A

A new trailer is here for the highly anticipated film Nomadland, which stars Frances McDormand as a modern-day nomad. This piece highlights the film’s outstanding festival performance and gives us a further look at this moving tale and what looks to be another sensational performance from McDormand. Cat Clifford’s “Drifting Away” adds a folksy dimension to this piece, which uses keen editorial to beautifully capture the film’s stunning cinematography and produce a poetic snapshot of McDormand’s journey. The new key art cleverly plays with license plates and announces that the film will be both in theaters and Hulu on Feb. 19.

Pacific Rim: The Black

Trailer Agency: The Refinery
Poster Agency: The Refinery

The trailer for Netflix’s new anime series Pacific Rim: The Black shows off the franchise’s massive assets. With a towering open and somber horn, we are introduced to the sheer scale of these monsters. Emotional piano tones bring us through the story of two siblings fighting to survive in an overtaken world before transitioning to militaristic drum swells that bring us into the gigantic action set pieces. The key art finds our heroes in the shadow of one of these gigantic foes. Pacific Rim: The Black comes to Netflix on March 4.

Amend: The Fight for America

Netflix
Trailer Agency: BOND

A powerful new piece introduces us to Amend: The Fight for America, a Netflix docuseries exploring the Fourteenth Amendment, executive produced and hosted by Will Smith. This exceptional trailer sets up the importance of this examination and highlights the series’ unique narrative format of enlisting a tremendous cast of actors to read speeches and writings related to this vital amendment, which granted citizenship and equal rights to African Americans and slaves who had been emancipated after the Civil War. Using two excellent music cues, Sharon Jones’s “This Land Is Your Land” and Jac Ross’s “Saved,” the trailer creates a poignant meditation on our flawed country and encourages us to dig deeper when the series comes to Netflix on Feb. 17.
