We Have a Winner: Nike Takes Super Clio for the Big Game's Best Commercial
Celebrating women athletes in the brand's first SB spot since 1998
Today, a jury of industry experts awarded Nike the Super Clio for its “So Win” commercial celebrating women athletes. The prize honors the best Big Game commercial. (And it’s the same size as the Lombardi Trophy. The Philadelphia Eagles flew off with that.)
Developed by Wieden+Kennedy Portland and directed by Kim Gehrig through Somesuch, the :60 marked Nike’s first SB appearance since 1998. The stirring spot put the rise of women athletes in sharp focus during the biggest game night in men’s sports.
Societal pressures are no match for the likes of Sabrina Ionescu, Jordan Chiles, Caitlin Clark, Sha’Carri Richardson, A’ja Wilson, Aryna Sabalenka and Sophia Wilson, athletes who can speak their minds, break records, put themselves first, sell out arenas and much more.
“This spot about winning in the face of those who say you can’t is, indeed, the winner for me,” says Gabrielle Shirdan, founder and CCO of Kitchen Table, and one of our Super Clio jurors. “Beautifully shot, powerfully written—oh, how I miss great copy in Super Bowl commercials—and so strategically cast, from the voice over of Grammy-winning star Doechii to the hero in Sha’Carri. That ending shot of Jordan Chiles posing in the iconic shape of the swoosh: Bravo.”
“There is something so powerful about a brand and agency that work so brilliantly together,” notes Rob Reilly, global CCO of WPP and commissioner of the Super Clio Jury. “After 50+ years, W+K and Nike inherently know what the consumer needs at the moment. And in this moment, we all needed to believe that we can do anything.”
Juror Chris Beresford-Hill, worldwide CCO of BBDO, believes “Nike did more than just air a Super Bowl spot. They proved that ‘Winning Isn’t for Everyone’ was not one-and-done. Nike is fully back.”
