Adidas Drafts Patrick Mahomes for a Game of Paper Football

'Under Pressure' provides the soundtrack

So, your competition today is three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes. That sounds pretty intense.

Luckily, it’s only a game of desktop paper football. And this is just a metaphorical commercial from Adidas, designed to amplify the joy of competition and self-belief.

No pressure, right?

From Opinionated and director Derek Cianfrance, the work creates a goofily memorable vibe. Blasting Queen and David Bowie’s “Under Pressure” heightens the drama.

“Sport is about more than winning. It’s about the love of the game and the joy,” says Chris Murphy, Adidas SVP of brand communications. “We strive to help athletes at all levels understand how they can excel in the face of pressure, and we empower players to foster a positive mindset and focus on the fun. Just breathe and remember: You got this.”

Facing Mahomes, my finger would twitch and that little triangle would poke him square in the eye.

Still, Adidas, point taken.

“Pressure is a part of the game, but it doesn’t have to control you,” Mahomes says in campaign materials. “My best advice is simple: it’s only a throw or a catch or a kick—so trust yourself and enjoy the moment.”

Contrast this approach with Nike’s recent ads, which take a decidedly different direction, rocking the line “Winning Isn’t for Everyone.”

The Mahomes spot drops this week, with new episodes set to follow. Hoop stars Aliyah Boston and Anthony Edwards will appear in those.
