Tesco's Clubcard Stages Wacky 30th-Birthday Celebration

In BBH’s 30th-anniversary ad for Tesco Clubcard, we meet two couples. One signs up for the U.K. supermarket rewards program, the other doesn’t.

Can you guess who makes out best? Can you?!

Of course you can. But watch the :90 below anyway. It boasts fun period details, campy (but convincing) aging make-up and ever-mounting angsty regret as a stodgy suburbanite refuses three decades of Clubcard offers.

Dude, just take the damn card already!

Rewards for viewers include Sam de Jong’s zippy direction, Darude’s club-thumping “Sandstorm” soundtrack and spot-on performances that shift between restrained and absurdly OTT.

“The research and the detail that went into making sure every year was historically correct was long but it had to be done,” BBH senior creatives Holly Fallows and Charlotte Watmough tell Muse. “The art department rebuilt small sections of the old stores that were perfect replicas.”

“Then, the wonders of post never fail to amaze. Those guys used their magic to build out the rest of the set. Wardrobe and makeup were on point. Because of them, we travelled through time, without question.”
