2 Minutes With ... Jesús Lada, CCO of Havas Spain

His creative picks, from Frank Miller to 'Justino'

After three years at Leo Burnett Madrid, where he worked on the famous Christmas Lottery campaigns, Jesús Lada moved to Havas Spain in March 2017. As chief creative officer, he manages the creative departments at both the Madrid and Barcelona offices.

The Miami Ad School graduate has also worked at agencies including Ruiz Nicoli, Jung Von Matt, StrawberryFrog, Contrapunto BBDO, The Vidal Partnership and El Laboratorio.

We spent two minutes with Lada to hear about his creative influences and loves, and the soccer team he loves to hate.

Jesús, tell us…

The town where you were born.

Oviedo, Spain.

What you wanted to be when you grew up.

A professional basketball player.

How you discovered you were creative.

We all are creative. Some of us make a living out of it, some just use it in their everyday lives but don’t make money from it. One day I just found myself writing ads, and people seemed to like it.

A person you idolized creatively growing up.

Mr. Dan Wieden, Sir John Hegarty and Don Toni Segarra.

A moment from high school or college that changed your life.

After a couple of years of college in my home country, I decided to go to the U.S. and join the Miami Ad School. Game changer for me.

The first concert you saw, and your favorite band or musician today.

The first concert I remember was the Offspring. It is really hard to say who is my favorite band, but my favorite song is “Getting Away With It” by James.

Your favorite artist.

Frank Miller.

Your favorite hero or heroine in fiction.

Kojiro Hyuga.

The best book you’ve read lately.

I’m ashamed to confess that I choose Netflix and HBO over reading. I need to change that.

Your favorite movie.

I would say Pulp Fiction, or The Empire Strikes Back … but since nobody is listening, the truth is that I love Pacific Rim.

Your favorite Instagram follow.

@houseofhighlights.

Your favorite creative project you’ve ever worked on, and why.

By far “Justino,” for the Spanish Christmas Lottery. An amazing animation project on which we worked for months.

Your favorite creative project from the past year, and why.

A project we did for Banco de Santander in Brazil, and Copa Libertadores. It involved a visually impaired young guy, and his passion for soccer. One of those projects that really touches you.

Someone else’s creative project that inspired you years ago.

I’m not going to be original here, So, so many. BBH’s classics, tons of Nike’s campaign by W+K, every single campaign made by Droga5.

Someone else’s creative project that you’ve been envious of lately.

The latest Lacoste commercial by BETC and BK’s “Come as a Clown, Eat Like a King” campaign by LOLA MullenLowe Madrid.

Your main strength as a creative person.

Probably I am a good creative team builder.

Your weakness or blind spot.

I tend to fall in love with our ideas. Maybe sometimes I lack a bit of perspective.

One thing that always makes you happy.

Sounds corny, but the one thing that always works is to feel the sun in my face. And if you add the first sip of a cold beer while feeling that sun.

One thing that always makes you sad.

Every goal scored by FC Barcelona.

What you’d be doing if you weren’t in advertising.

I really don’t know. No idea. Maybe something in sports journalism.
