As confinement continues in most parts of the world, we’re checking in with creative people to see how they’re faring. Here’s an update from Mike Bucek, vp of marketing and business development at the Kansas City Royals.
Give us a one-line bio of yourself.
Longtime sports marketer and leader with an optimistic outlook towards sports helping to unite and provide hope as we emerge from this crisis.
Where are you living right now, and who’s with you?
In Lenexa, Kansas, with my wife Sharon, daughter Rachel and Shelby the Powerdog.
What’s your work situation like at the moment, and how are you moving ahead during the crisis?
Typically it’s been 10-hour days with more than half of each day on Zoom calls.
Describe your socializing strategy.
Staying six feet away from everyone except my wife, daughter and dog.
How are you dealing with childcare, if applicable?
Fortunately my kids are grown, but I have a lot of compassion for many of my staffers who are managing home-schooling and their kids in general.
What are you reading?
Mostly contracts and industry trade publications.
What are you watching?
Trying to watch documentaries a bit more. I enjoy the one on rock bands on AXS TV.
What are you listening to?
Plenty of classic rock and, being from Chicago, blues.
How are you staying fit?
I’m a gym rat but have managed to adapt to working out at home with dumbbells and running four miles a day.
Have you taken up a hobby?
Unfortunately no.
Any tips for getting necessities?
I quickly realized shopping the last hour before stores close is when the fewest people are in the store.

How I took simple things like going to a store for granted.
What’s your theory on how this is going to play out?
I think things will be different moving forward and am hopeful that people are taking this opportunity to re-evaluate and when we emerge we’ll be a better society for everyone.
