#WFH Diaries: Holly Roe of GLOW

As confinement continues in most parts of the world, we’re checking in with creative people to see how they’re faring. Here’s an update from Holly Roe of GLOW.

Give us a one-line bio of yourself.

I’m a senior art director at GLOW, based in Brooklyn.

Where are you living right now, and who’s with you?

I’ve been staying at my parents’ house in Illinois with my husband and dog.

What’s your work situation like at the moment?

My work situation is pretty bonkers. I’m working out of my parents’ kitchen, due to it having great natural light. I only have a MacBook Pro without a large monitor, which is rough, but I’m making it work! My husband and I have been sitting next to each other taking video calls throughout the days—probably speaking less now than during a regular workday.

Describe your socializing strategy.

A lot of Zoom calls and chat, chat, chat with my family.

How are you dealing with childcare, if applicable?

Are you referring to wrangling an Australian Shepherd? My family is doing a great job sharing dog duties, but I’ve had to throw off my headphones in the middle of a call to chase my dog down the street while she ran after a pickup.

What are you reading?

Walk Through Walls: A Memoir by Marina Abramovic. It’s incredible.

What are you watching?

The Office and old-school mob movies.

What are you listening to?

LCD Soundsystem, Wolf Alice.

How are you staying fit?

Going for runs through the middle of nowhere. My dad let me know that if I run to the red barn and back, it’s 2.25 miles.

Have you taken up a hobby?

Does snacking count? I cook a lot, and my parents seem to be taking full advantage of a live-in chef.

Any tips for getting necessities?

Lots of online shopping. I packed for one week, and we are going on our sixth week.

An awkward moment since all this started.

I have been wearing my husband and father’s shirts for almost every video call, so there’s that.

Best work email you got since all this started.

The email announcing that we won a new client since we’ve been in quarantine.

An aha! moment since all this started.

It’s been inspiring seeing how everyone on our team has been so dedicated and positive through all of the chaos and adjustments.

What’s your theory on how this is going to play out?

No clue. I’m taking it day by day, trying to stay sane. I’m hoping this adjustment gives us the ability to reset, appreciate what is important, and come out kinder and stronger than before.
