Patrick Stewart Hits New Heights in Paramount+ Super Bowl Spot
All that Shakespearian training comes in handy
Which brand will take home the 2024 Super Clio for the best Super Bowl commercial? We’ll find out on Feb. 12.
Patrick Stewart gives a peak performance in this Paramount+ Super Bowl :60.
It’s a celeb-filled romp, with live and animated P+ faves Drew Barrymore, Arnold (who gets thrown), Peppa Pig, Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba), Jeff Probst and Miami Dolphins Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa—plus music by Creed, who appear in the spot.
They’re all trapped atop Mount Paramount, and hurling the animated Arnold a great distance could lead to their salvation, apparently. “
More importantly, “Throw the child!” could replace “Engage!” as Stewart’s catchphrase.
Here’s an extended cut:
“Barrymore! Shut your face!” That could catch on, too.
O Positive’s David Shane directed the spot, which the streamer developed with Droga5.
This one belongs to Sir Pat, who tosses off a towering comic turn as he elevates each and every line. In fact, all the stars rock, playing either to or against type for maximum impact.
Now, it’s one thing to cram celebs into a commercial. But over the past few years, the “Mountain of Entertainment” campaign has consistently done so with strategic, satisfying style (last year’s Sylvester Stallone SB romp serving as one notable example).
While funny, there’s just enough tension in Stewart’s cantankerous outbursts—and Arnold’s painful fate—to boost the premise.
Yes, Patrick, throw that child! You’ve earned it. And, Drew—pipe down already!
Paramount+ will stream Super Bowl LVIII on Feb. 11.
“We knew we had to go big with Paramount+ being the streaming destination for this year’s Super Bowl and deliver something fun, memorable and representative of our brand,” EVP, creative marketing Terry Minogue tells Muse.
Casting Stewart made sense because, “he starred in our very first ‘Mountain of Entertainment’ commercial three years ago when we launched the brand campaign at the Super Bowl,” Minogue says. “Patrick has such a sharp sense of humor and some of his best lines of dialogue were ad-libbed.”
