Ben Proudfoot

Los Angeles

CEO/Head of Production

One-sentence bio: On a crusade for the return of original and handmade filmmaking, to explore and evangelize the idiosyncratic power of the short film, and to resurrect the creative studio campus pioneered in Hollywood in the 1930s.

Creative philosophy or approach: At Breakwater, we not only love finding the best stories, but we love telling them in our signature style, employing our proprietary methodology. We work overtime to create the best short documentaries we can muster. We’re prolific in creating award-winning original films like That’s My Jazz, Kunstglaser and George. We are proud that many of our films are also made in direct partnership with discerning brands as a proven alternative to advertising. And consequently, our successful brand-partner films financially allow us to also make narrative shorts.

As I continued to grow my career, I shifted gears to representing and producing for a roster of renowned photographers, as an artist’s agent at AFG Management and later Marge Casey. Most recently, I now apply my experience and expertise as a freelancer or full-timer, by producing for advertising agencies, such as Arnold, Lloyd&Co, Directv, Translation, Pereira O’Dell, Interesting Development, YardNYC, AirParisNY, amongst others. I take great pleasure in networking, sharing my ever-evolving industry resources, curating photography work and having the honor to collaborate with new artists and well as innovative consumer brands.

Using that lens helps me to evaluate how an edit makes me feel and how I think the audience will feel in turn feel. The audience having a genuine positive experience is paramount. Injecting as many moments that spark the desired feeling is the best way to truly connect with your audience. If it makes sense, I try and inject humor into ads. I find that a little chuckle here or there helps to lower people’s guard into allowing themselves to have that desired experience.

Hanna Choi

Hanna Choi

New York

Art Director

One-sentence bio: An Asian mind with an ambitious grind, and a Latina soul inside an adventurous troll.

Creative philosophy or approach: People say customer is king, but for me, research is Queen B on top of the king (no pun intended). Without research you can’t find the best bars to drink real mezcal, the best horror movies to Netflix and chill, nor the best insight to win the brief. Perhaps you have a good idea, but if you don’t have concrete data to back you up, your idea is just good, not great. I even search for the stupidest/craziest ideas to see if they could actually work, and surprisingly enough, they do (most of the times). Once my Asian left brain tells me I’m good to go, then my Latina right brain starts crafting non-stop until both brains decide the work is perfect.

One-sentence bio: Historian and music lover living a crush with advertising.

Creative philosophy or approach: As a historian, I see the advertising as one of the voices of the present and past, the voice of social causes and the voice of the cultural change of our society. The advertisers like us should be honest with the audience, because we’re the human face of the brands, and as Ben Parker (Spiderman’s uncle) says, “with great power comes great responsibility.” We have the power to transform society but also to create ideas that represent the worst of society. We can decide. I decide to change the world for better.

One-sentence bio: Current copywriter and teacher at The Bookshop School for Ads, former classmate of Meghan Markle.

Creative philosophy or approach: Everything is copy. I try to always examine life situations for human truths that could become great advertising somewhere down the line. Like potty training, for instance. So many human truths there. Recently, I read a great New Yorker article about people who swim in the the U.K.’s lakes and ponds during winter. It suggested that immersing yourself in the cold, murky water makes people with ordinary lives feel a sense of exhilarating danger. “That’s interesting,” I thought to myself, and filed it away.

Creative philosophy or approach: I love what we do as creatives. I mean we get paid for daydreaming! The best kind of work comes from agencies where high concept is the coin of the realm, and humanity takes precedence over dollars. What makes a great ad is soul and craft. I think these days the craft is there but the soul is dying. I will bring the soul train and a force of energy that will take your agency to the A-list.

This curiosity that makes me click “next episode” and ditch the intro is what drives me to create stuff that people can’t take their eyes off. While it mostly has a bad rep, I vouch for bingeing – after all, soaking in as much pop culture as possible is what made me want to create for a living. I strive to keep my work as free of B.S. as possible. The holy grail for me is what I call Culturally Explosive Work™, work that becomes pop culture rather than reflecting what’s already there.
