Cultivating Collaborative Spaces for Innovation
'Innovation is not about hierarchy—it’s about ideas'
Innovation thrives in environments where people feel safe, valued, and encouraged to contribute. In healthcare marketing—where creativity is essential to driving impactful patient engagement and communication—collaboration isn’t just nice-to-have, it’s a necessity. However, fostering a truly collaborative and innovative culture doesn’t just happen. It requires more than gathering a group of people in a room; it involves creating a space where every voice is heard, different learning styles are embraced, and individuals are empowered to contribute ideas fearlessly.
Here’s how you can cultivate such a space.
Start with a Human Touch: Icebreakers and Inclusivity
The tone of any collaborative session should be set early. When everyone is seen as equal contributors, the room opens up to free-flowing creativity. An effective way to create an open environment is by starting with an easy icebreaker. For example, ask each person to share a fun fact, a favorite childhood vacation spot, or something unrelated to their work. At a recent AbelsonTaylor Group Q&A session with our Senior Leadership Team, one employee asked panelists, “What is the smell of your childhood?” The answers ranged from, “the aroma of my mom baking cookies” to “cut grass” and “summer sweat.” Simple icebreaker exercises like this help break down initial barriers and create common ground, reminding everyone that innovation is not about hierarchy—it’s about ideas.
Set Clear Expectations for Success
Before diving into the session, establish clear expectations. Let participants know the purpose of the meeting, the desired outcomes, and how they’ll be contributing. This not only helps people feel prepared, it also tells them what success looks like.
Establish Some Ground Rules
Be explicit about the importance of respect, openness, and building on one another’s ideas. Setting these ground rules early ensures that everyone is working with a shared understanding of what collaboration looks like and fosters an environment of trust. Reiterate that this is a judgment-free zone, where bold ideas are welcomed and there are no wrong answers. Encourage the use of positive, constructive language throughout, such as:
“Yes, and…” responses: This approach encourages participants to build on one another’s ideas, fostering collaboration rather than criticism.
The “I like, I wish, I wonder” framework:
- “I like” emphasizes the strengths of an idea.
- “I wish” opens the door to suggestions without being dismissive.
- “I wonder” invites further exploration, sparking thought along new pathways.
Embrace Different Learning Styles and Comfort Levels
Not everyone feels comfortable ideating in the same way. Some thrive in group settings, while others prefer individual reflection. To create an inclusive space for creativity, think about how to accommodate different learning styles. Consider incorporating a mix of individual ideation, group brainstorming, and pre-work to give everyone the chance to engage in ways that suit them best.
For example, send out prompts or pre-work before the meeting so participants have time to reflect and develop ideas on their own. During the session, allow space for individual ideation, where attendees can quietly jot down thoughts, followed by group discussions to build on each other’s ideas. This approach ensures that introverts and extroverts alike can contribute meaningfully, without feeling overwhelmed.
At AbelsonTaylor Group, we further encourage idea sharing through an agency-wide Psychological Safety initiative. Psychological Safety is a concept geared to creating a diverse environment in which all individuals feel respected, accepted, and valued. This, in turn, empowers employees to openly share their thoughts, ask questions, take risks, learn from failure, and challenge the status quo without fear of negative consequences. The result is a robust exchange of diverse perspectives that enhances the collaborative creative process.
Innovation Through Collaboration
Creating a space for innovation in our industry is about more than encouraging creativity—it’s about cultivating collaboration through inclusion, trust, and positivity. By setting the right tone with icebreakers, accommodating different learning styles, and using positive language, you can build an environment where people feel comfortable contributing and building on each other’s ideas. The result? A more innovative, dynamic, and collaborative culture that fosters breakthrough solutions for brand challenges. When people feel they belong, creativity flourishes, and the power of collaboration becomes the key to driving real impact.
