From WandaVision to Supernova, See This Week's Trailers and Posters
Plus, lots of creepy content as we head to October
Lots of horror coming from Hollywood this week. October must be around the corner!
This week’s work explored haunted houses, murder mysteries, a monster apocalypse, a hotel that makes guests part of the frightening entertainment, and nuns battling evil forces. If that weren’t enough to cause nightmares, then rest assured because we also go inside the terrifying mind of Clive Barker.
Aside from the scares, we got a first look at two new series from the Marvel Universe. Dare I say, they look super. We also got in some laughs during a Crood family reunion. Of course, the laughter was shortlived after Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci trampled our hearts in the trailer for Supernova.
There are plenty of scares, several chuckles, and a few tears ahead. Here are some of the latest trailers and posters.
WandaVision
Disney+
Trailer Agency: Level Up AV
Poster Agency: BLT Communications
From the Marvel Universe comes WandaVison, an original series that blends classic television with superheroes. The trailer premiered during the Emmys and had the internet buzzing. It begins in black and white with a vintage aspect ratio. The plot, which feels like Bewitched meets Avengers, slowly unravels and keeps you mesmerized throughout. The music keeps you completely spellbound. The classic “Twilight Time” perfectly blends into the trailer as it adapts to the stories’ changing times. The poster creatively captures the plot and intertwines the colliding worlds. WandaVision is coming soon.
American Murder: The Family Next Door
Netflix
Trailer Agency: Netflix Creative Studio
Poster Agency: Blood & Chocolate
Get ready for a new true-crime docuseries, which follows the disappearance of a seemingly happy suburban mom and her two daughters. The prime suspect is her loving husband. The trailer is gripping—combining social-media footage from the missing person, as well as police videos and interviews. The smart poster design resembles a polygraph chart and uses wedding rings in the title treatment. The mystery begins Sept. 30.
The Haunting of Bly Manor
Netflix
Trailer Agency: Trailer Park Group
We saw the teaser, and now the trailer for The Haunting of Bly Manor has arrived. What we get is a lot more story about the anthology series’ new dwellings. The editing is quick and delivers fright after fright. The lovely instrumental cover of Mötley Crüe’s “Home Sweet Home” adds an unsettling tone to the storytelling. Discover the mystery of Bly Manor on Oct. 9.
Books of Blood
Hulu
Trailer Agency: Wild Card Creative Group
Poster Agency: Concept Arts
Based on the anthology of stories from horror master Clive Barker, Books of Blood combines three nightmares tangled through time. The frightening trailer is filled with jumps, but it’s the heightened sound design and music that intensify each scare. The poster design is a terrifying but artistic concept, exhibiting the pages of nightmares that live in the mind. Books of Blood premieres Oct. 7.
The Croods: A New Age
Universal Pictures & Dreamworks
Trailer Agency: Aspect
Poster Agency: N/A
The Croods are back, and they’re entering a new age of living. The trailer for the sequel is filled with humor that will delight folks of all ages. Flo Rida’s “My House” is a fun addition to the entertaining animation and ties in wittily to the storyline. The poster design weighs heavily on the copy, and rightly so because it’s quite amusing. The Croods return this Thanksgiving.
Cadaver
Netflix
Trailer Agency: Mark Woollen & Associates
After a nuclear disaster, a starving family finds solace in a welcoming hotel owner. However, once inside, they soon realize the evening’s entertainment unwillingly includes them. The trailer is creepy, but also incredibly stylish, luring audiences in. The ominous music sets a chilling tone for the piece. See Cadaver on Oct. 22.
Love and Monsters
Paramount Pictures
Trailer Agency: Ignition
When the world is overtaken by monsters, Joel Dawson loses everything. There’s only one thing to keep him motivated through this monster apocalypse—love. The trailer for Love and Monsters cleverly sets up the love stories only to introduce this dystopian universe. What stands out most is the trailer’s song choice, The Kinks’ “You Really Got Me,” which adds a layer of humor to the action. See Love and Monsters on Oct. 16.
Black Narcissus
FX Networks
Trailer Agency: BOND
Poster Agency: N/A
Based on the bestselling novel by Rumer Godden, Black Narcissus is about a group of nuns who build a mission at a remote clifftop palace in the Himalayas. Once there, they soon discover the haunted history inside the walls. The trailer is intense, and the music builds on the tension, but my favorite part is the lovely title card graphics added throughout. Like the palace itself, the beauty draws you in. The stunning poster uses a unique photographic angle, making the nun seem larger than life amid the Himalayas. The typography on the title is unique and well-tailored for the limited series. Black Narcissus premieres Nov. 23.
Helstrom
Hulu
Trailer Agency: Wild Card Creative Group
From inside the Marvel Universe comes Helstrom, the story of two siblings whose father was a powerful serial killer. As adults, they reunite and track down the worst parts of humanity. The trailer blends action, mystery and terror, in addition to a killer soundtrack. But what’s extra creative about this marketing is the social tie-in that went along with the trailer’s launch. You can like or retweet to summon one of the main characters via Twitter. Once summoned, each week, you’ll receive an animated episode of the Helstrom family history leading up to the series launch on Oct. 16.
Supernova
StudioCanal UK
Trailer Agency: Intermission
Poster Agency: N/A
Supernova is a heartwrenching love story about two partners who go on holiday to visit friends, family and places from their past, as one of the men battles early-onset dementia. The trailer introduces the love story, capturing the romance and humor, only to deliver the heartbreaking blow of this devastating illness. Everything about the trailer feels poetic—the music, the style and the nature of the storytelling itself. The poster design beautifully shows the love, heartache and explorative essence of this story through photography. Catch Supernova on Nov. 27.
