From The Crown to Hillbilly Elegy, See This Week's Trailers and Posters
Plus, The West Wing cast reunites for a special episode
It was my first week of covering the latest trailer and poster releases here on Muse, and the world of entertainment marketing gave me a hearty welcome.
We got to groove to smooth jazz, K-pop and show tunes, and revisit beloved presidential administrations and childhood storybook characters. We learned family drama abounds, whether you’re in the Royal Family or the mountains of Appalachia, and got to reflect on the human condition with unborn souls and Stephen King.
Let’s take a look at the great work from this week.
The Crown
Netflix
Trailer Agency: Create
After giving us a tiny tease a few weeks back, the full teaser for The Crown Season 4 is finally here, and it does not disappoint. Driven by a pulsating beat and voiceover of a passage read at Charles and Diana’s 1981 wedding ceremony, this teaser brilliantly sets the tone for the season to come. As the voiceover talks of a fairytale marriage, the quick cuts and ominous music let us know it’s going to be anything but. We definitely get adequately teased on what look to be incredible performances by new cast members and, of course, the glorious costumes that are in store for us when the Crown returns on Nov. 15.
A West Wing Special
HBO Max
Trailer Agency: Ignition
Fans of Aaron Sorkin’s beloved HBO drama The West Wing were delighted to see the cast reunite in this promo for an upcoming special episode. The special is a filmed staged reenactment of a Season 3 episode and will benefit When We All Vote, a nonprofit organization dedicated to sharing the importance of voting. The trailer uses BTS shoot footage and clips of some of the episode’s signature moments to build into a tribute to the cherished West Wing opening title credits. Although everyone is a bit older and face masks are in place, it sure feels good to be back in the Bartlet administration and hear that sweet, sweet theme music. Reunite with the crew on HBO Max on Oct. 15.
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie
20th Century Studios
Trailer Agency: Wild Card
Poster Agency: LA
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is a film adaptation of the popular musical that follows a young man as he pursues his dream of becoming a drag queen. The trailer does a great job of providing a sneak peek of his journey’s ups and downs and some of the wonderful songs that made the musical a hit. The piece allows us to meet Jamie and learn some of his struggles and then explodes into bright colors and that high-energy, dancing-in-the-streets feeling you get when you begin to find yourself. The poster is a striking and colorful close-up of an eye that conjures some mystery, but there’s still plenty of glitter and an inspiring line of copy to remind us this is going to be a fun one. Get ready to talk about Jamie on Feb. 26.
Nine Days
Sony Pictures Classics
Trailer Agency: Jump Cut
Poster Agency: N/A
The trailer for Nine Days matches the dreamy, meditative tone you’d expect for a film about unborn souls interviewing for their chance for life on earth. Interspersed with VCR-inspired quote cards from the film’s excellent critical reception at Sundance, we get pulled into the film’s unique concept and stunning cinematography with this reflective piece. The poster’s inverted imagery plays cleverly off the featured critic pull-quote. Nine Days is due out in 2021.
I’m Your Woman
Amazon Prime Video
Trailer Agency: Grandson
Superb sound mixing and sound effects paired with an evocative cover of Jefferson Airplane’s “Somebody to Love” work perfectly to transport us back to the ’70s and get us ready for action in this trailer for I’m Your Woman. This new crime film comes to Amazon Prime Video on Dec. 11.
Blackpink: Light Up the Sky
Netflix
Trailer Agency: Tiny Hero
Poster Agency: BLT
Blackpink: Light Up the Sky is an upcoming documentary that gives a firsthand look into the fascinating world of K-Pop by way of the best-charting Korean girl group of all time. The trailer intersperses footage of the Blackpinks’ screaming fans and show-stopping performances with interviews and more private moments with the four girls to give a taste of the intimate portrait this documentary will provide. And of course, you can’t make a trailer for Blackpink without graphics in their namesake color scheme and some of their signature beats. It was also delightful to watch the group react to the trailer release. The poster provides a simple, candid photo of the group that again hints at getting to know the girls in a more natural state. Get ready to watch Blackpink rise to fame (and hopefully some more cute howling puppies) when the documentary hits Netflix on Oct. 14.
The Stand
CBS All Access
Trailer agency: Open Road
With a hauntingly slowed-down track of Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” as the soundtrack, this trailer introduces the thrills we can expect when Stephen King’s The Stand is adapted as a limited series on CBS All Access. This excellent and poignant music choice guides this chilling piece that plays with pacing to keep the action coming. The Stand premieres Dec. 17.
Sylvie’s Love
Amazon Prime Video
Trailer Agency: Tiny Hero
Poster Agency: N/A
This trailer for Sylvie’s Love has graceful storytelling and a retro vibe that warms us up for the romance to come in this new Prime Video film. The music choices in this piece help tell the story—fittingly, we get some great jazz as we watch Sylvie fall in love with Robert, a saxophone player in a jazz quartet, but the jazz is replaced with the sultry Ruth B. track “If This Is Love” as Sylvie and Robert are separated. The key art is also wonderfully retro and harkens back to other classic love tales. Find out if this is indeed love on Christmas Day.
Come Away
Relativity Media
Trailer Agency: MOCEAN
Come Away is an imaginative retelling of young Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan. The trailer provides a storybook feel with a voiceover narration and glimpses of some of the treasured tales’ recognizable characters and moments. The exhilarating music and sound design add both whimsy and intrigue to the piece. Get your imaginations ready for when Come Away is released Nov. 13.
Hillbilly Elegy
Netflix
Trailer Agency: Mark Woollen
Poster Agency: The Refinery
The performances are front and center in this trailer for Hillbilly Elegy, a new drama coming to Netflix based on the bestselling memoir by J.D. Vance. The trailer gives us plenty to remind us of Amy Adams and Glenn Close’s star power as we dive into the emotion of this multigenerational family story directed by Ron Howard. The key art brings us to the greenery of Appalachia and alludes to life’s twists and turns. Follow J.D.’s life path when Hillbilly Elegy comes to Netflix on Nov. 24.
