2 Minutes With ... Ezequiel Consoli, Freelance CD for the Gay Creative

On 'Pride Train' and learning from the human experience

Ezequiel is the Gay Creative. He’s a freelance creative director for art who hails from Argentina, and also a semi-celebrity on TikTok. Ezequiel started his own LLC and wanted it to sound like himself. So he named it “EC GAY CREATIVE.” His bank thought it was funny when he went and opened a business account under that name.

He can be found eating pints of Ben & Jerry’s, walking to the bodega to get more Ben & Jerry’s, or working on his fitness (while simultaneously eating Ben & Jerry’s). And, to no one’s surprise, he happily resides in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, N.Y. And you can find all of his work at thegaycreative.com

We spent two minutes with Ezequiel to learn more about his background, his creative inspirations and recent work he’s admired.

Ezequiel, tell us…

Where you grew up, and where you live now.

I grew up in Argentina! In a small town in Buenos Aires called Quilmes (Like the beer), but I live in Brooklyn.

Why you pursued a career in entertainment.

I grew up watching North American television and advertisements. I very quickly realized that the influence they had on me and my friends was incredibly powerful. I always wanted to play a role in that level of impact in society.

Three movies/TV shows you couldn’t do without, and why.

Ted Lasso, Derry Girls and Euphoria. Simply put, they all show a very different perspective and side of what the human experience is, through very different mediums. I see myself portrayed in a lot of the characters as well.

Your favorite movie trailer or poster.

Favorite movie trailer has to be Triangle of Sadness. I was not expecting the movie I watched from watching the trailer and I think that doesn’t happen very often lately.

One of your favorite projects you’ve ever worked on, and why.

One of my favorite projects is “Pride Train.” I was one of the founders of in collaboration with Jack Wells and Thomas Shim. It came out while I was still in college and it has been such an important part of my career. It got me my first job and it also taught me all of the things I know about making good work that impacts people’s lives.

A recent project you’re proud of, and why.

Inside & Outwards. During the pandemic, I started writing a lot and one of those poems turned into this PSA that I made in collaboration with my copywriter, Kyle Harrison. It was a personal project that somehow ended up giving as an Emmy. Not only that, but we also got to work with Sarah Jessica Parker, Sufjan Stevens and the NYC Ballet.

One thing about how entertainment marketing is evolving that you’re excited about.

I think that there has never been a more exciting time for this industry. We are finally past the point where “good work” is work that impresses your creative director so that he can go and brag about it to his other creative director friends. Now good work is work that random people on the street will talk about and be touched by or even, a TikTok.

Someone else’s work, in entertainment or beyond, that you admired lately.

I think a lot of the work I admire now it’s mostly musician’s honestly. Gracie Abrams is one of my biggest inspirations right now. Rosalía also! I think she has made her work touch every single industry including the advertising industry. Another person who really inspires me is Daniel Arsham. I think I want to be him when I grow up. Or date him.

A book, movie, TV show or podcast you recently found inspiring.

Normal People … it was genuinely hard to watch. The pain and heartache the male character goes through felt very real and surprising to watch. I also really love Euphoria, since it has been very much similar to my experience growing up in Argentina in some weird ways.

A visual artist or band/musician you admire.

Cj Hendry! Her attention to detail and style is inspiring. Also, I love her underdog story.

Your favorite fictional character.

Ted Lasso … his character has given me hope that there are good honest men out there. And even a bit of faith for humanity.

Someone worth following in social media.

Mr Beast. He has reinterpreted what having wealth and money can be. He is also maybe the only human right now who is slowly making me regain hope for humanity. Oh and me, @gaycreative on TikTok.

Your main strength as a marketer/creative.

I think I would say my biggest strength is understanding how people feel. I have always been super open about my emotionality (it’s probably from being Latin American and also a Cancer.) I think that has been my biggest asset in finding real and unique insights about how people relate to brands and products.

Your biggest weakness.

I guess also my emotionality? I get caught up in doing the right thing a lot of times.

Something people would find surprising about you.

I used to be a singer and an actor! While I lived in Argentina that was the career I was pursuing. So because of it, I also write a lot.

One thing that always makes you happy.

Being around people I love, and puppies.

One thing that always makes you sad.

Thinking about a lot of my favorite moments so far, I won’t ever get to relive them for the first time. And how far my family and friends are.

What you’d be doing if you weren’t in entertainment.

Probably either be a stylist or an interior designer!
