Philadelphia Cream Cheese Made a High-Tech Bowl to Catch Double Dippers

Droga5's stunt for Philadelphia Dips

Throughout history, there has been no reliable way to safeguard against double dippers—those greedy, inconsiderate souls who would brazenly abscond with a second helping of dip from a party bowl using the same chip. Ew.

Now, however, Philadelphia Cream Cheese and Droga5 have come up with the perfect, if completely ridiculous and impractical, solution.

Say hello to the Double Diptector, a smart device made to catch double dippers in the act. Halle-friggin’-lujah.

PHILADELPHIA Double Diptector

How the tech actually works is a complete mystery. It’s described in the video as a “pressure-sensitive bowl that pairs with your phone’s camera” and uses “motion technology to track the movements of a single dip, and the infamous double dip.”

How it distinguishes one person’s second dip from another person’s first dip is anyone’s guess. It would be amusingly awkward if it did work, with the aggressive, accusatory A.I. voice blaring out, “Double dipper! Double dipper! Double dipper!”

The drawings of the tech are no help at all, either.

Still, they did actually make one of these things—but just one. It’s available on eBay to the highest bidder. As of this writing, bidding stands at $107.50 after 23 bids. That’s a lot of cheddar for a double dip detector.

The April Fools-y stunt is meant to draw attention to Philadelphia Dips, a new line of dips from the Kraft-owned cream cheese brand.

Philly—fresh off its heroics in helping to fix the #SadBagel emoji problem—says one in four Americans secretly double dip. Which means there are millions of offenders out there. But if this innovation can catch even one of them in the act, it will have been worth it.
