Columbia Journalism Review Is Opening a Fake News Stand Today in NYC

TBWAChiatDay pop-up arrives in Bryant Park

Just in time for the midterms, the Columbia Journalism Review and TBWAChiatDay New York are shining a light on the dangers of misinformation by opening a news stand in NYC full of fake news—with headlines ripped from the Internet and put on the covers of realistic-looking print newspapers and magazines.

The news stand will be live today from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Bryant Park.

False news headlines fool American adults about 75 percent of the time, agency and client tell Muse, citing an Ipsos Public Affairs Survey. Passersby will be encouraged to take a closer look at the newspapers and magazines; inside they will find CJR’s educational reader’s guide with tips on how to recognize and stand up to misinformation.

The stunt is part of CJR’s “Real Journalism Matters” ad campaign. See pics below.
