Nike Unveiled This Tiger Woods Ad Moments After He Won the Masters
After a long drought, he's still chasing the dream
Nike loves to release congratulatory ads right after major sports moments. It’s been doing it for years—among my favorites were the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Cavaliers tributes in 2016, after both franchises won their respective titles.
Of course, with Tiger Woods’ remarkable comeback culminating in the 2019 Masters win on Sunday, you had to figure Nike had a new commercial up its sleeve. This is a brand that stuck by Woods through all his difficulties over the years—and indeed, the new Nike spot rolled out just minutes after Woods sank his final putt.
The spot goes back in time, as scene after scene scrolls by from right to left—showing Woods as a progressively younger golfer. It ends on Woods as a 3-year-old, and makes the point that he’s still chasing one of the most hallowed records in sports—having broken his 11-year majors drought.
This was Woods’ 15th major title victory. Jack Nicklaus won 18 in his illustrious career. It would be a tall order to expect three more from Woods. But if he maintains his level of play in the coming years—who knows?
Judging by the tweet below, Nicklaus, for one, is rooting for him.
A big “well done” from me to @TigerWoods! I am so happy for him and for the game of golf. This is just fantastic!!! ??@TheMasters
