#WFH Diaries: Freelance Copywriter Jeff Barry

As coronavirus lockdowns persist around the globe, Muse is checking in with creative people to see how they’re faring. Below, we catch up with freelance copywriter Jeff Barry.

Give us a one-line bio of yourself.

Ex-account guy. Back-alley beer trader. Word maker-upper.

Where are you living right now, and who’s with you?

Chicago, with my girlfriend and imaginary friends as a result of solitary confinement (aka quarantine).

What’s your work situation like at the moment?

On an in-house project with a great brand that came from a referral. Also working with some awesome friends on www.TheAvailList.com and teaching at the Chicago Portfolio School remotely.

Describe your socializing strategy.

Lots of Zoom, Facebook video chats, Jackbox games, House Party, Gchat and weekly online poker with friends. And reaching out to people to make the www.TheAvailList.com even better.

How are you dealing with childcare, if applicable?

Thanking my past self for not having any children yet.

What are you reading?

Tons of Reddit’s subreddit: WallStreetBets (learning options trading), and digging into our awesome list of resources on www.TheAvailList.com.

What are you watching?

Sopranos (from the beginning), The Walking Dead (last season), Fauda and the other 1,362 shows that I’ve started and need to finish.

What are you listening to?

My “Discover Weekly” playlist on Spotify and my girlfriend’s work calls because #quarantine.

How are you staying fit?

Mentally? Alcohol (in moderation) and video chats with friends and family. Physically? My TRX band and turning living-room furniture into gym equipment.

Have you taken up a hobby?

Stock options trading and socially-distanced beer trading. Wait, does job searching count?

Any tips for getting necessities?

Three words. The. Avail. List. Also, Instacart.

An awkward moment since all this started.

Loading up a Zoom video call for portfolio school while forgetting Tiger King was my background. Actually, I got a lot of love for that one.

Best work email you got since all this started.

It’s a tie between an email that said I was hired or that I can now invoice.

An aha! moment since all this started.

We really would be screwed without technology.

What’s your theory on how this is going to play out?

The next big agency consolidation: FCBSSPDDBBDOKRPGS+PQRSTUVWXYZ.
